Hello again, DVD Town Citizens. I have one question for you all. Are you prepared for the zombie apocalypse? If a zombie outbreak suddenly happened in the next few hours, are you ready to go? Me? Ive got plenty of guns, ammo, bottled water, and Hot Pockets. I do need to hit the Hostess Outlet store and grab me some delicious Twinkies. I also need to hit the stores and pick up my copy of "Zombieland." The zombie action-comedy will available this week on DVD and Blu-Ray. It might not be as creepy as "28 Days Later" or the classic Romero films, but "Zombieland" was a helluva fun trip. Just remember to enjoy the little things in life and read James Plaths
review of the Blu-Ray.
Besides "Zombieland," a wealth of other films will be out in stores this week. If youre thirsting for more action, the Thai martial arts film "Ong Bak 2: The Beginning" might be your Gatorade. The sequel to "Ong Bak" (which will be available on Blu-Ray this week) stars Tony Jaa whos like a young Jackie Chan on steroids and genetically engineered with the DNA of a spider-monkey. The hits are brutal and the stunts are insane.
Hes no Tony Jaa, but Jean-Claude Van Damme is still trying to kick ass in "Universal Soldier: Rengeration." Aside from "JCVD," I think the last time the Muscles from Brussels starred in a decent flick was the original "Universal Soldier," which has spawned one official sequel ("Universal Soldier: The Return") and a pair of direct-to-video sequels without Van Damme. UniSol Luc Deveraux is back and so his is archenemy from the original film, Dolph Lundgren as rogue UniSol, Sgt. Andrew Scott. David Van Der Haeghen has written up a
review of the Blu-Ray.
Marvel Comics in conjunction with Lionsgate has released several direct-to-video animation films featuring their franchise characters. The majority of them have been weak efforts, especially when compared with the films being put out by DC and Warner Animation. However, "Planet Hulk" looks like it could be a good one. Based on the epic storyline, "Planet Hulk" finds the Green Goliath shot into space by a secret coalition of superheroes led by Iron Man. The Hulk winds up on the planet Sakaar where hes forced to compete in brutal gladiator games for its tyrannical ruler. "Planet Hulk" will be released in single-disc and double-disc DVD editions as well as on Blu-Ray.
If youre tired of the endless remakes and torture porn that passes for horror these days, "The House of the Devil" might be what youre looking for. A retro-70s horror movie (the studio even released a promo copy on VHS), it stars newcomer Jocelin Donahue as a college student who takes a babysitting job at a creepy house owned by a creepy couple. Weve got a
review of the standard edition DVD, courtesy of Mark Steensland, and a
review of the high definition BD by Ranjan Pruthee.
If zombies and satanic rituals arent your cup of tea, a few romantic films will be out this week to prep you for Valentines Day. Jennifer Aniston and Aaron Eckhart are a florist and self-help guru, respectively, who fall for each other in the critically lambasted "Love Happens." Rose Byrne is a cute schoolgirl who sparks a relationship with a young man with Asperger Syndrome in "Adam." And an eclectic collection of actors and filmmakers pool their talents together for the anthology film "New York, I Love You," a follow-up to "Paris Je Taime." Among those involved include James Caan, Julie Christie, Shia LeBeouf, Maggie Q, Eli Wallach, Cloris Leachman, Ethan Hawke, Orlando Bloom, and Natalie Portman who also makes her directorial debut.
Academy Award winner Hilary Swank stars as legendary aviator Amelia Earhart in the aptly-titled "Amelia." Directed by Mira Nair, "Amelia" didnt fare nearly as well (critically or commercially) as other recent biopics like "Ray" or "W."
Lionsgate releases the documentary "More Than a Game" on DVD only. The film chronicles the high school basketball career of current NBA star LeBron James.
Next weekend, Universal releases a new version of "The Wolf Man," starring Benecio del Toro. This week, theyll be releasing the original 1941 "Wolf Man," starring the great Lon Chaney, Jr., as a part of the Legacy Series.
Several films will make to jump to Blu-Ray this week including the 1962 musical
"The Music Man" and the Clint Eastwood film,
"Mystic River", both of which were reviewed by John J. Puccio. Also available on Blu-Ray will be "Fear & Loathing in Las Vegas," "Gangs of New York," the Coppola Restoration versions of "The Godfather" and "The Godfather, Part II" as individual releases," "The Last King of Scotland," "Maid in Manhattan," and "Walk the Line."
For TV on DVD, weve got "Beverly Hills 90210: Season Nine," "G.I. Joe: Season 1, Vol. 3," "The Mary Tyler Moore Show: The Complete 6th Season," "Mr. Ed: The Complete 2nd Season," and "Murder, She Wrote: The Complete 11th Season." Jeez, were there really that many murder mysteries for Angela Lansbury to solve?
That does it for this week. Well be back next week with a look at the Coen Brothers film, "A Serious Man," and the Vince Vaughn comedy "Couples Retreat."
